Figure 9.2 La Volta Basic Step with Lift

Musical Example 9.1 La Volta

In the sixteenth century, the dancing master Thoinot Arbeau issued a warning to the men:

After having turned by as many cadences as you please, restore the damsel to her place where she will feel, no matter what good countenance she makes, her head whirling, full of vertigo and giddiness, and perhaps you will feel the same. I leave you to judge whether it be a proper thing for a young girl to make large steps and wide movements of the legs. And whether in this VOLTA her honor and well-being are not risked and involved. Nowadays dancers lack these courteous considerations in their VOLTAS and other similarly wanton and wayward dances that have been brought into usage. In dancing them the damsels are made to bounce about in such a fashion that more often than not they show their bare knees unless they keep one hand on their skirt to prevent it (Buck-man, p. 91).
